About Me

Kathy Dawes: Scientist, Educator, and Civic Leader

Dana and Kathy Dawes

My husband, Dana, and I moved to Moscow in 1973 to attend the University of Idaho for graduate school. After receiving my Masters Degree in Zoology, I worked as a lab technician, started my own business doing scientific illustrations and worked in the Moscow School District as an 8th grade science teacher for many years. We raised our two children in Moscow and, besides owning our own home in Moscow, we own forest land in Viola and manage it to maintain a healthy forest and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire.

As a Latah County resident over 50 years, I was a founding member of the Moscow Arts Commission, Moscow Community Theatre, Friends of Phillips Farm, Inc., and Palouse Discovery Science Center where, as an AmeriCorps volunteer, I developed and conducted outreach with hands-on science programs for rural schools in northern Idaho and eastern Washington.

I served as a Latah County Parks Board member for 13 years and have been an active member in several other nonpartisan/ bipartisan organizations such as the Palouse Chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby, promoting bipartisan solutions to the effects of climate change, the  League of Women Voters of Idaho that encourages informed participation in government and influences public policy through voter education and advocacy, and Braver Angels, a national organization seeking to depolarize American politics.

In 2024, I was awarded the  Latah County Human Rights Task Force Rosa Parks Human Rights Achievement Award.

For fun and relaxation, I play in the Sesitshaya Marimba band.

Over the years I have watched Kathy Dawes volunteer tirelessly to make things better for Idahoans. She is smart, thoughtful, and just who we need working for us in Boise.
